Child Car Restraints Update

There are some upcoming amendments to the legislation regarding child car restraints, which will apply from Tuesday, 26 June onwards.

The Road Safety Commission's Frequently Asked Questions web page outlines and discusses the main areas of amended legislation (https://www.rsc.wa.gov.au/Your-Safety/Safety-Topics/Children).

The amendments primarily relate to the use of child car restraints in taxis and on-demand transport. It is important for Type 1 Child Car Restraint (CCR) Fitters to reinforce the best practice message to members of the community, that where available, an appropriate child car restraint should always be used.

Child Car Restraint Checking forms
With the end of the financial year approaching, Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are asked to submit any completed yellow checking forms as soon as possible.

Not only is the submission of checking forms a requirement for all Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters, it also provides an insight into the level of service that the Type 1 CCR Fitter network provide across the state.

Checking forms should be marked attention to Tammie Deshon, Road Safety Project Officer, WALGA, PO Box 1544, West Perth WA 6872.

New accredited Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter a first for Upper Gascoyne

The child car restraint fitters network now has its first accredited Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter in the Upper Gascoyne area, with Councillor Blanche Walker recently undertaking training to become a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter.

Training took place in Carnarvon during May and was one of the free courses run throughout the state by WALGA's RoadWise, with funding from the Road Trauma Trust Account.

Along with other course participants Mark Stratton, Andrew Allan and Glenn Campbell from Carnarvon Hospital (pictured below), Cr Walker will use her new skills to provide information to the Shire of Upper Gascoyne community, helping ensure children are appropriately and safely restrained when travelling in a vehicle.

All Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are qualified to assist parents and carers in:

  • choosing a restraint that is appropriate for the child’s age and height
  • ensuring that the restraint is in good, safe condition
  • checking that the restraint is correctly installed, and
  • providing advice regarding after-market anchorage points, cargo barriers and accessories.
