Funded Grants Round 2 July 2007
Cannington ESC Drive for Life - Cannington Community ESC - $3,745.00
Cannington Community Education Support Centre (ESC) has over one hundred students in years 8 through to 12. Students at the Centre are on individual programs as many have learning difficulties. In 2000 the Centre piloted the first drivers' education program in the state. The school felt a need to develop this program due to the students' open desire in obtaining a driver's licence and the prominent risk factors that they face as novice drivers.
All senior students participate in a drivers' education program entitled Keys for Life. During this program students learn about road rules, information on getting a licence and the major four risks (speed, alcohol, fatigue and the non use of restraints).
The students learn valuable information relating to the vulnerability of young road users, road crash history and consequences of safe and unsafe driving. To make the program as realistic as possible the school would like to purchase fatal vision goggles which demonstrate to students the concept of impairment to the students.
After participating in the course students can be used as trainers and present the information taught in the Keys for Life program to other students.
City of Stirling Child Car Restraint Sustainability Project - City of Stirling - $16,570.00
The City of Stirling is aiming to contribute to an increase in child car restraints used by parents and a reduction in the number of children killed and seriously injured as a result of traffic crashes. The project seeks to make child car restraints available to low socio-economic groups and increase the number of type 1 fitters - including experts from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds. There are a number of parents without child car restraints in the City of Stirling due to lack of information or money. The City of Stirling seeks to purchase convertible restraints, booster seats and H Harnesses to increase the number of children correctly restrained via a loan scheme with a deposit. This will be administered through the City of Stirling with the help of the Mirrabooka Migrant Centre, Department of Community Development, City of Stirling's Women's Refuge, Centrelink Multicultural Services, Wanslea Family Centre and surrounding organisations.
The restraints will be stored at the City of Stirling and will provided to those parents who have a genuine and viable need for the restraint which will be monitored by the referral organisations and the City. All restraints in this program will be fitted by a certified type 1 fitter. At present the City's Road Safety Officer has successfully attended the Child Car Restraint Type 1 Fitters Training Course conducted by RoadWise and is a registered Type 1 Fitter. Due to high demand, long waiting periods and lack of reach to CaLD communities, the City of Stirling seeks to train more professionals to become ceritified type 1 fitters. This will result in increasing the amount of child car restraints fitted and installed correctly.
Demonstration cards will be produced to increase confidence of parents and carers to install child car restraints. The demonstration cards will involve step by step instructions on how to correctly install thier child car restraint. The demonstration cards will only be provided by type 1 fitters who have installed the restraint and checked the demonstration card is correct to the type of restraint that they have installed. This will improve the skills of parents and carers so that they are able to correctly install their appropriate and safe child car restraints in their motor vehicle. Culturally specific demonstration cards will also be produced to target parents form CaLD backgrounds. Lanuages produced will be Arabic, Sudanese Arabic, Dinka, Somali, Anharic, Oromo language and Vietnamese relating to the prominent languages in the Ciy of Stirling, derived from consultation from Mirrabooka Migrant Centre, Centrelink Multicultural Services and Department of Community Development.
An evaluation of the program will also be conducted collecting both process and impact measures.
