Funded Grants Round 3 August 2007

'Please slow down consider our kids' Bin Sticker Project - City of Belmont - $3,800.00

Reducing speeding in our local community especially around schools through targeted education and awareness is probably one of the most powerful incentives to reduce road trauma and can be done at a very low cost.
Research suggests that as speed increases:

  • Road users are less able to react to others' actions or detect road hazards;
  • Stopping distances increase and manoeuvres become more difficult which result in the loss of vehicle control; and
  • Severity of crash increases.

In an effort to reduce the incidence of speeding within 40km/h zones, the bin sticker project has been recognised as a successful campaign in changing attitudes and raising awareness of the effects of bad behaviours of drivers on our roads.
The bin stickers are self adhesive signs that can be attached to the side of a rubbish bin facing oncoming vehicles. When bins are out on garbage collection days, the visual impact of repetitive stickers is exceptional.
It is hoped by engaging the parent and child groups at various local schools, they can give ownership to the project in localosed areas and parents themselves can act as responsible speed setters.

Fatal Vision Goggles - City of Bunbury - $1,800.00

The South West region has seven RoadWise Committees and active local government community development in the 16 shires in the region. Currently drink driving awareness education, displays and presentations are provided throughout the region and fatal vision goggles are borrowed from RoadWise head office for this purpose which is often inconvenient. The use of a full set of goggles retained in the region will enable all groups to provide a substantial impact with the purpose of minimising the incidents of drink driving through the provision of a practical education component. These sessions will contribute to minimising the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use throughout the region.
