Funded Grants Round 3 August 2010
City of Melville, Community Safe Speed Promise - $51,287.00
The Community Safe Speed Promise is based on an existing project, the Neighbourhood Pace Car Pledge and works like a treaty between communities; stating “we will act as a guest in your community if you act as a guest in ours“. This is a new way for the community and the Local Governments to take control of road safety on their local streets. Resident participation is the cornerstone of the initiative. The initiative asks residents to sign a Safe Speed Promise and commit to driving within the speed limit and being a courteous driver. The Cities of Melville, Fremantle and Cockburn will provide a bumper sticker for those residents who sign the Safe Speed Promise so they are easily identifiable and can set an example for other motorists to follow. Intensive promotion of the program through local media, Local Government mediums and community groups that highlights the value of the program will be used to recruit participants. When Safe Speed Promise drivers slow down, they reduce the impact of their car use on the communities they drive through and encourage following cars to observe the speed limits. Having a small percentage of vehicles driving the speed limit city-wide is expected to start a positive cycle. People feel more comfortable walking or cycling, which reduces traffic levels, making streets even safer to walk or cycle. The City of Melville already utilises the SAM Speed trailer on a daily basis and issues (Safe Speed) bin stickers to residents on request.
Warmun Aboriginal Community, Warmun Community BMX bike park - $6,500.00
The Warmun Community BMX bike park is a project designed to promote and support road safety for all ages in the Warmun Community. The outcome of the project is to have as many children and adults up skilled in bicycle safety and ultimately riding their bicycles safely in and around the Community. Another outcome is the reduction in near crashes between vehicles and bicycles that have occurred in the community over the past few months.
