Funded Grants Round 6 November 2010
City of Subiaco – Speed Display Trailer (Speed Alert Mobile - SAM), $20,000
The City of Subiaco intends to develop a plan for deploying a SAM in areas known to have 85th percentile speeds over the posted limit, in areas with people who are more vulnerable to road accidents, at road works and at events where a large audience can be reached with educational messages. In and bordering Subiaco there are six hospitals, four schools and several retirement communities which typically attract those who are most vulnerable to road accidents which is compounded by most facilities being adjacent to busy roads like Hay Street and Roberts Road. It is planned that the SAM will be deployed around these places in cooperation with the respective organisations. The City has been doing traffic counts for over a decade and has compiled a list of roads where average travel speeds exceed the posted limit. It is planned that the trailer will be used on these roads, on scheduled events and road work around the City. To compliment these activities the City will set up stalls at various community events, at city buildings like the library and promote the Towards Zero strategy in community newsletters. Online support will also be provided, allowing for community feedback/suggestions and requests to deploy the SAM.
Shire of Capel, Please Slow Down Consider our Kids, $8,100
Funding from this grant will enable the Shire of Capel to purchase 3,000 ‘Please Slow Down and Consider Our Kids’ stickers to be placed on residents’ wheelie bins along all bus routes within the Shire. The Shire has been approached by community members who have seen the stickers around school zones in the City of Bunbury and Shire of Busselton, and have requested that the Shire obtain some stickers. The Shire feels it is necessary to position the stickers along all bus routes rather than solely around school zones because the majority of children travel by bus to school and many of the bus drop off/pick up points are on major roads where the speed limit is 110km/hr. High speed limits on the Shire’s roads are a concern for the residents with school aged students. The Shire feels that by implementing this campaign it will remind motorists to “Slow Down and Consider our Kids”. This campaign will allow residents to become actively involved in alerting motorists that children are around and will provide residents with a sense of ownership over the safety of their children on major roads.
