Funded Grants Round 12 May 2005
1. Northam RoadWise Committee - Northam RoadWise Calendar and Road Safety Forum 2006 - $3,960.00
2. Rossmoyne Senior High School - Rossmoyne Senior High School Year 12 Leavers Memorabilia - Road Safe Restraints - $600.00
Some of the students at Rossmoyne Senior High School are organising memorabilia for the year twelve’s finishing school this year. The product that has been decided on is a key ring in the form of a personalized number plate. This design is going to be produced in the Rossmoyne High School colours which also happen to be the same as the W.A license plate colours. The license plate design seemed relevant for the year twelve students as they are at the age where they are able to get a licence. Having a personalised number plate with the "RSHS - 05" design will appeal to students as a leaver's memory and as a unique key ring. The minimum amount of key rings being sold will be 100 due to the supplier. This guarantees at least 100 surveys completed.
Our project seeks to increase publicity related to the role of restraints in crashes (increased risk of severity) through the development of educational material. With them receiving their "P" plates we are trying to campaign road safety awareness and increase their knowledge. Each person who obtains a key ring will be given an educational pack. The key ring will not be distributed until each survey has been filled, which can be found in the pack. To further educate, road safety posters will be positioned around the school, in places such as female and male toilets, canteen, classrooms, hallways, etc. Since the large majority of the target group for these key rings are seventeen year olds, who might attaining a car (being on the road), we wanted as many of the students to know as much about the use of restraints and road safety issues as possible. As the Road Safety Council "restraints" campaign will be running at the same time as the key ring purchases, we thought that this would be an opportune time to launch this project.
3. City of Geraldton - Please Slow Down - Consider Our Kids Project - $17,622.00
Speeding has been identified as one of the leading causal factors in road related deaths and serious injury in WA. In an effort to reduce the incidence of speeding on local roads, the bin sticker project has been recognised as a successful campaign in changing the attitudes and behaviours of drivers on our roads. The City of Geraldton and Shire of Greenough have previously felt the need to have in place a campaign that addresses speed on our local roads. The bin stickers are self-adhesive signs (designed by RoadWise) that can be attached to the side of a rubbish bin that faces on-coming vehicles. When bins are out on garbage collection days the impact of repetitive stickers is exceptional.
Pre and Post evaluation will occur in the form of reply paid postcards to the households involved to gauge current behaviours and attitudes about speeding, their willingness to participate in the project by having a bin sticker and also to inform and educate the public about the effects of speeding. The delivery of these reply paid postcards will be through placement in the Midwest Times Community Newspaper. Traffic counts will also occur both before and after the project is run to make comparisons in speed and traffic flow on the roads that have been identified for the Bin Stickers. The Lions or Rotary Club will be approached in relation to applying the “Slow Down – Consider Our Kids” Stickers on the bins to ensure uniformity and correctness in the application of the stickers.

7. Derby RoadWise Committee - Don't Drink and Drive - Derby Cup 2005 - $2,300.00
This project will involve the Derby RoadWise Committee working in partnership with the Derby Turf Club to raise awareness and influence behaviours related to drinking and driving amongst spectators and participants at the Derby Cup race day on July 2nd 2005. The event is a great opportunity to promote this message to a large number of people in one place. This is important in rural and remote areas where this is not always possible and public education opportunities are not common. The Derby Cup attracts people from all over the West Kimberley and further. The primary target group for this event will be males, including Indigenous males, aged 18 – 39 years. Race days are attended predominately by males and especially young males, and it is hoped that by promoting the dangers of drinking and driving at such an event the messages will penetrate our target group.
Promotional opportunities at this event will include the Don’t Drink & Drive logo in any media associated with the event, inclusion of a full page Don’t Drink and Drive advertisement in the race program, regular Don’t Drink & Drive announcements over the PA system, Don’t drink & Drive banners around the race track and the development of one permanent sign to remain at the track, as well as an interactive display providing information on standard drinks and use of the Fatal Vision Goggles, promotional standard drink information at the bar, breath testing, competitions and sponsorship of one race (‘The Don’t Drink and Drive Race’). This event coincides with the Road Safety Council’s State Drink Driving Campaign, which runs from 3rd July – 20th August 2005.
