Funded Grants Round 2 July 2005
1. Garnduwa Anboorny Wirnan Inc - The Remote Communities Football and Athletics Belt Up Competition - Garnduwa Festival '05 - $7800
As part of the Garnduwa Festival we plan to run a remote communities football and athletics championship which will attract 20 teams from remote communities throughout the Kimberley, Pilbara and Northern Territory. The football championships which run over 5 days will consist of 2 divisions, one which is for participants from major communities and towns and the other for teams from smaller remote communities. in conjunction with football there will be an athletics competition which will be open to males and females of all ages. There will be sprints, relays and long distance events. The competition will provide athletics opportunities for those who would not normally have the opprtunity to participate in such events. Both football and athletics competitions will promote road safety, particularly the use of seatbelts.
The Remote Communities Football and Athletics Belt Up Championships will be held during the Garnduwa Festival in late September 2005. Garnduwa's philosophy is to maximise the Indigenous population's participation in meaningful and healthy lifestyle activities across the sport and recreation spectrum of programs. When Garnduwa was formed the first program requested to be set up by the Indigenous population was the festival. The Garnduwa Festival has beed held each year since 1992 and has become the pre-eminent Indigenous festival of its type in WA if not Australia. Upwards of 5000 people attend over the 5 day period.
The main message for the project will be "Belt Up. There's No Excuse". The project will also reinforce the dangers of riding in the open load space to attend and return to communities before, during and after the festival. The project will target young indigenous males aged 15-30 in the football competition and Indigenous males and females aged 15-30 in the athletics competition.
The project outline includes:

2. Town of Kwinana - Choices - $5160
Develop a script and performance around a driving scenario to look at the choices and consequesnces that occur when young people engage in drink driving, speeding/reckless driving. The performance would be launched at Freak Fest, the Town of Kwinana's Youth festival in October. There would also be some road safety displays at the festival. The performance would be filmed with the intention of presenting it at youth groups, Tafe and the high school in the remainder of the year. It would then be left with the groups as a resource for use in following years. A kit would be developed for youth leaders to use including a series of questions to be used as a prompt for discussions with young people as well as educational materials like the Office of Road Safety campaign materials and a list of useful contacts like Paraplegic Benefit Fund, Road Aware and Office of Road Safety etc. Young people from the Kwinana Youth Advisory Council would steer and develop this project.
