Funded Grants Round 9 February 2007

1. Road Safety Mural

The Town of Victoria Park is proposing a community mural artwork on the pedestrian underpass that connects Hordern St to McCallum Park. The artwork will entirely cover all vertical walls along the 51cm length of the underpass (a total surface area of approximately 236 m2). Through a series of workshops, young people will learn about issues of road safety covering the main campaigns to counter drink driving, reduce speeding and increase restraint use. Participants will reflect their learning into a series of original illustrations and promotional messages, which in turn will be designed into an overall artistic mural to promote road safety to the wider community. It is proposed as an early intervention program to educate young people about the responsibilities and importance of road safety. The Town will commission a recognised artist to coordinate the project and they may enlist other artists to help complete the mural. The artist will work in conjunction with the young people to help transpose their understanding of the road safety themes into quality artwork.

2. Wheelie Bin Sitckers - "Please Slow Down Consider Our Kids" - $26,640.00

This project furthers the City of Wanneroo's aims to reduce travel speeds on local roads by providing and promoting wheelie bin stickers - a self adhesive sign (sticker) that can be attached to the side of a wheelie bin that faces oncoming vehicles. The campaign allows community residents and businesses to individually assist in promoting slower speeds and show support of their commitment to road safety. In addition many residents have enquired about what they can do personally to be seen to support the lower residential speed limits and to increase safety for children walking along the streets. Wheelie bin stickers will also be distributed on local roads (50km/h) where there have been speed complaints, but traffic calming is not warranted or may not be funded immediately.
Other strategies include:
- Using the City's speed advisory  trailer in school zones over a period of time, along traffic calmed and local (50km/h) roads to reinforce promote positive driver behaviour;
- Distribution and promotion of bin stickers targeting schools, bus stops, active parks, recreational centres, child health/care centres, shopping centres and local roads with speed issues;
- Coordination of police enforcement;
- Promotion of bin stickers and speed display trailer in community newspaper and on local community radio station;
- Promotion of Safe Routes to School;
- Extensive Black Spot Program; and
- Distribution of educational materials.
