Funded Grants Round 5 October 2008
Williams/Narrogin/West Arthur Speed Alert Monitor Trailer - Shire of Williams -$18, 528
The Shires of Williams, Narrogin (including Town) and West Arthur have banded together to collectively seek funding to purchase a shared Speed Alert Monitor (SAM) Trailer. This project has been developed in collaboration with the local Police (Narrogin and Williams stations), with a view of targeting known problem locations (Albany Highway, Great Southern Highway, Williams-Narrogin Road & Coalfields Highway) as well as focussing on the streets surrounding the 7 schools in the district (East Narrogin PS, Narrogin PS, St Matthews PS, Narrogin SHS, Narrogin WA College of Agriculture, Williams PS and Darkan DHS). The Speed Trailer will be a useful asset during known peak times of heavy haulage (seeding: April/May and harvest Sept-Jan) to alert drivers in regards to speed, fatigue and the consequences of the combination of the two. It will be used adjacent to roadworks to alert drivers of their speed and their need to slow down in these works areas (to protect both themselves and the roadworkers). The trailer is to be housed at the Shire of Williams Works depot and the coordination of its loan to the other Shires/Police will be by Shire of Williams administrative staff.
Supporting Road Safety and Reducing Travel Speeds in the Shires of Bruce Rock, Corrigin & Quairading, Shire of Corrigin - $17, 880
The Shire of Corrigin in conjunction with the surrounding Shires of Bruce Rock and Quairading have identified road safety as an issue which needs to be tackled as a more priority issue. With this as a priority issue, the three shires are tackling the issue with a Reduce Speeding campaign. The purchase of a Mobile Speed Alert Trailer will allow police and the Shires to create a more visual appearance in targeting road safety messages such as speeding, seat belts and drink driving. We believe the more visual method will have a greater impact in getting drivers to take these and other road safety messages in. Some road of concern within the three shires are: Brookton Highway, Corrigin-Bruce Rock Road, Corrigin-Quairading Road, York-Bruce Rock Road and York-Merridin Road. As well as these major roads, school streets in all towns will benefit from the trailer. These streets include Lynch Street, Hill Street and Kirkwood Street in Corrigin, Dunstall Street and Baxter Street in Bruce Rock and McLennan Street, Cubbin Road and Murphy Street around Quairading's School. The trailer would laso be used at special events within each shire, in emergency situations to alert motorists of haxards and at road works sties to remind drivers of what speed they are needing to drive at. The speed trailer will be kept at the Shire of Corrigin and Police and other Shires will book the trailer as required.
