Funded Grants Round 5 October 2011

Shire of Yalgoo, Child Car Restraint Project Yalgoo - $5,000.00

The Yalgoo committee has discussed the possibility of piloting a project that aims to reduce incidenced of the children travelling unrestrained or incorrectly restrained in vehicles. The project is in response to anecdotal evidence supplied by the committee members about the number of children currently travelling unrestrained in vehicled and also by the realisation of a number of barriers that are not enabling familied to access, afford or install restraints in their vehicles. In part this response has arisen in relation to changes to CCR legislation which will occur in October 2010. It has ben noticed that a solution to overcoming these barriers needs to occur as by solely infringing tesidents and not providing an alternative, improvement in the outcome of having children restrained would not be achieved. A number of families have been identified by police as not having restraint and it has also been noted that a number of families cannot afford or access restraints in Yalgoo. A hire scheme is proposed where familis are able to access restraints for a minimal fee on a 6 monthly basis, which will be reassessed when they return the restraint to check its condition and also correct fitting. It will be a hire sheme that provides an appropriate restraint for a child's height and weight and will also ensure that therestraint is correctlt fitted for the interim while they are encouraged to take the opportunity to purchase a restraint that can be delivered to Yalgoo. Education will also be component of the project, where consequences and effects of not using a restraint correctly will be highlighted to the community. A bank of restraints will be purchased and then residents will be able to access them and a Type 1 fitter for a minimal fee. The project will provide taining courses for agencies and resiidents to participate in the Type 1 fitter's corse.
