Towards Zero: what does it mean for Local Government workshops
A key activity in the first phase of the LGSSP was to conduct a series of workshops for Local Government officers and Elected Members. The workshops were designed to increase understanding, and assist in identifying the barriers and enablers for Local Governments to embed safe system principles into policy and practice.

One hundred and fifty one Local Government officers and Elected Members from 54 Local Governments (33 regional and 21 metro) attended the workshops. The first half of most workshops began with a presentation on Towards Zero, the safe system approach, Local Governments role in road safety and some of the key findings of the Local Government safe system survey. The second half focussed upon exploring the barriers and opportunities for Local Governments in creating a safe system for their communities.  Across each of the questions discussed during the workshops, some common themes emerged.  Under each cornerstone it was identified that funding and resources; skills and knowledge; and improved coordination were all critical issues for Local Governments to effectively implement a safe system approach.

The results report comprehensively presents all findings from the 16 workshops, including the pre- and post-evaluation, the individual worksheets, and the focus groups. Please click here to download the report

The summary report presents key findings from all 16 workshops held between May 2010 and May 2011.   Please click here to download the report.

Local Government Safe System Project - baseline survey report
In 2009 the Local Government Safe System Project conducted a survey of all Local Governments to determine the current level of road safety and safe system awareness, activity and capacity. The results of the survey show that Local Governments are interested in learning more about the safe system approach and its practical implications at a Local Government level. Most respondents also indicated at least some capacity to increase the inclusion of road safety in their plans, policies and strategies.

The survey results will be used as benchmark information to assist the LGSSP in developing strategies to support Local Governments to deliver best practice road safety and contribute to the implementation of Towards Zero. The results also provide valuable feedback to the sector, as Local Governments continue to acknowledge the importance of addressing road safety in their communities.

A full report covering the results of the survey is available to Local Governments. To request your copy, please contact the LGSSP team.
