Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter Course

Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter Training - KatanningWestern Australia is leading the way in child car safety, having achieved national accreditation for a course designed to ensure the correct installation of child car restraints (52778WA).

Forming part of the Type 1 Child Car Restraints Fitting Service funded by the Road Safety Council and created by WALGA RoadWise, the course is expected to increase the number of qualified Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters across Western Australia.

The Road Safety Commision has worked closely with various stakeholders including KidsafeWA, WALGA RoadWise Program and the Red Cross to develop two units of competency covering installation and advice on correct child restraint use to achieve the national accreditation and ensure longevity for the course.

The WALGA RoadWise Program runs a maximum of five Type 1 Child Car Restraint courses across Western Australia per year to enable people in the regions to become Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.

Course Aims

The aim of this training program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to competently check and fit child car restraints in vehicles and to be part of a statewide network of qualified and approved Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.

The course covers theory and practical components to enable participants to run their own checking and fitting stations for their clients and community.

This is a nationally accredited course funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and supported by the Road Safety Council.

Why become a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter?

Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter are able to correctly fit child car restraints to an approved standard and give advice and consumer information regarding different types of child car restraints and their suitability for use according to a child’s age and size.

Services can be offered to clients or people in the community who need a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter. Services can be provided voluntarily or clients can be charged a fee for the service.

Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are provided with ongoing advice and support available via the Child Car Restraint Project Officer and other appropriately experienced and skilled practitioners, access to website information, news bulletins and networking opportunities.

Course Structure

The WALGA RoadWise Program delivers the course free of charge, with allocation of places provided with the following preferences:

  • Individuals intending to offer a free fitting service to the community,
  • Individuals who have a limited number of Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters in their area,
  • Limited places per organisation to enable multiple organisations to attend.

All participants are required to have a minimum of $10 million Public Liability, and are required to sign the Business Rules for Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters to be able to attend the course.

The Course in Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting is offered by WALGA RoadWise in the following format:

  • First unit of competency - RSCICR301A Provide information and advice on child car restraints

This is delivered as an external unit and has a theoretical assessment component. This unit takes approximately one day to complete, and participants must be deemed as competent in this unit prior to participating in the second unit of competency.

  • Second unit of competency - RSCICR302A Install child car restraints

This is delivered as a face-to-face unit and has both a theoretical and practical assessment. The face-to-face component is one day in length, and there is a brief additional post course assessment that requires completion.

Participants must be deemed as competent in both units of competency to complete the course.
