We can all play a role in preventing road crashes.
Sharing the responsibility for road safety means that governments, communities and individual road users can all contribute in different ways to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
Since 1994 the Local Government and community road safety network has been planning and delivering local solutions which have contributed to saving lives and preventing injuries.
As a part of WALGA, the peak industry body for Local Governments in WA, RoadWise is uniquely placed to work closely with Local Governments.
Local Governments are system designers within the safe system framework, and have a strategic and operational road safety role as road managers, planning authorities and fleet managers, in addition to their community development and leadership roles.
When it comes to road safety, Local Governments are crucial partners in the translation of safe system principles into practice.
As a program, we work with Local Governments to help support and build local capacity, with a focus on embedding best practice road safety into policy and practice. By integrating safe sytem principles into the way the local road network is mananged, Local Governments can prioritise effort and resources and more effectively improve the safety performance of their local road network.
This will contribute to the achievement of the medium and long-term goals and targets of the both the National and State road safety strategies, and work towards a point in time where no harm occurs on local roads.
Our Regional Road Safety Advisors Can Help
Our Regional Road Safety Advisors work with Local Governments to develop and deliver creative, evidence-informed road safety initiatives and resources. They also provide access to resources and training, and increase local road safety knowledge, which helps build the capacity of the network to take effective action towards improving road safety in Western Australia.
Contact your Road Safety Advisor to discuss the road safety priority issues in your area and find out what can be done to effectively address these issues.
Local Partnerships and the Community
Through the support of a team of road safety advisors, policy and project officers, WALGA's RoadWise has a well-established existing RoadWise road safety network of more than 6,000 individuals and 63 local road safety committees, spread across the 11 regions of the state. This includes direct regular contact and positive working relationships with Local Governments, government agencies and non-government organisations as well as local business and community groups.
As a member of the community road safety network you can:
Support your community
Work together with others
Have access to information and resources
Make a difference
Develop new skills
Become a part of a state-wide network
There are many ways you can become involved, from joining your local RoadWise or road safety committee, to volunteering at a Driver Reviver operation, supporting targeted speed reductions, developing road safety policies for your workplace or sharing road safety information with your networks.
