City of Cockburn Team Target Driver Distraction
The City of Cockburn roads team received a timely reminder to avoid driver distraction at their Christmas morning tea late last month.
As well as enjoying some tasty treats and discussing Christmas plans, members of the roads team were given information about the dangers of driver distraction and provided with a mobile phone bag. The bag displays the message ‘Turn it off, bag it up! You can live without it’, and encourages drivers to turn off their phone and put it away before driving.
A mobile phone is just one of the many distractions that takes a driver’s attention from the task of driving. During 2016, there were 26 fatalities attributed to inattention, whilst 86% of West Australians rated distraction as a danger on the road [1]. With these figures in mind, it is important to remove as many distractions as possible before you set off on your journey.
Ways to reduce distraction include:
- turning off your phone and bagging it up before setting off,
- adjusting vehicle controls before driving,
- taking a break to eat, drink or groom,
- checking the route you need to take before leaving,
- ensuring pets and other passengers are properly restrained, and
- identifying what distracts you and avoid it if possible.
