City of Joondalup Upgrades Whitfords Avenue to Improve Road Safety for all Road Users

The City of Joondalup is in the final stages of the Whitfords Avenue upgrade from Flinders Avenue to John Wilkie Tarn, Hillarys.

This section of Whitfords Avenue borders the foreshore area and is used by beach goers, tourists and the general community. It is also heavily utilised by the cycling community. The aim of the upgrade works is to improve road safety for all road users.

The design elements included two single lane roundabouts at Flinders Avenue and Pinnaroo Point entrance. The roundabouts incorporated the latest design techniques to reduce traffic speeds on the approaches and therefore reduce the potential for vehicle/pedestrian/cyclist conflicts.

Due to the popularity of this route by the cycling community, important design elements have also been incorporated including dedicated two metre wide cycle lanes to separate road cyclists from vehicle traffic within the vicinity of the roundabouts. Two metre wide shoulders have also been provided between the two roundabouts, with contrasting red asphalt to further enhance the road environment.

The entrance to the dog beach was also modified to a left in/left out arrangement to reduce the risk of right angle related crashes on a 70km/h road.
