Taking a Bird's Eye View in the Pilbara

One of the first things you may notice when travelling in the Pilbara region is that you are sharing the roads with a variety of vehicles, including some rather large trucks.

During a recent visit to the Pilbara region, Senior Road Safety Consultant Engel Prendergast took the opportunity to meet with truck drivers to talk about some of the road safety issues they face and some of the steps being taken to address these issues.

Heather Jones from Pilbara Heavy Haulage Girls has been working extensively with other road safety stakeholders to improve safety for truck drivers, as well as other road users. Heather promotes a comprehensive driver education program which focuses heavily on safety and includes a minimum of 160 hours of on road supervised driving.

Heather has also been working with road houses to encourage them to provide healthy eating options and facilities where drivers can rest and freshen up before heading on their way, and has been advocating for improved break down areas for drivers.

As with smaller vehicles, not all trucks are equal when it comes to safety. It is important to check for safety features in trucks just as you would with a car. Safety features include speed limiters, anti-jack-knife devices, stability control, lane departure warning systems, collision warning with emergency braking system, structural integrity of cabin space and good visibility mirrors. These
safety features not only provide for safer outcomes for truck drivers but also for those who share the roads with them.
