Safe Roads and Roadside Treatments Address Safety on Julimar Road

A popular tourist drive which runs through the Shires of Toodyay and Chittering continues to be modified, with design and other roads works carried out to improve safety for road users.

Julimar Road is a beautiful weekend drive, popular with motorcyclists and car drivers alike, especially on weekends. This popular road has had a number of crashes in both the Shires of Toodyay and Chittering over the years, resulting in fatalities and injury.
In 2015 the Shire of Chittering was successful in an application for Federal Black Spot funding to upgrade a curve in the road. There had been three fatalities at this location over a five year period, two of which involved motorcyclists. Following Main Roads WA approval of the new road design in 2016, the Shire acquired land and re-aligned the curve.

The Shire of Chittering has also written to Main Roads WA requesting that the speed zone be reassessed for this section of road (down to the Chittering Road intersection).

The Shire of Toodyay is engaged in road safety improvements on its own part of Julimar Road. In 2016-17, three sections totalling approximately seven kilometres were widened to bring the whole road to a seven-metre seal using Black Spot funds, and in 2017-18 the Shire will fund improvements to the road's shoulders.

Additional works including widening and drainage will be carried out, subject to funding approvals.
