Morning school zone time change welcomed

Road safety advocates across the Kimberley have welcomed the change to morning school zone speed limits times.

The time change will come into effect from Monday 8 October 2018.

The new morning school zone time will be 7.00am to 8.30am from the existing time of 7.30am to 9am.

Broome RoadWise Committee Chairperson, Cr Warren Fryer said the change is a result of extensive consultation with school principals, Education Department and Catholic Education Office, WA Police Force and Gocal Government.

“There have been many calls over the years to alter the time to improve the safety of children arriving at school and better reflect the early school start times in the region.”

“It hoped the new school zone time regime and recently installed electronic signage will translate into increased safety for pedestrians and other road users within school zones.”

“As kids come to and from school it’s important for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be aware and take extra care during these busy times. Even a small reduction in speed could save a child’s life.”

“Keeping kids safe as they get to and from school is everyone’s responsibility,” Cr Fryer said.

Main Roads WA will be placing overlay stickers on all school zone signs during the school holidays from 22 September through to 7 October.

There are no plans at this stage to change the afternoon times.
