Southern Cross - The First Driver Reviver Operation

Published on Thursday, 17 February 2022 at 12:00:00 AM

The first Driver Reviver site in Western Australia operated at Christmas in 1992, in the town of Southern Cross, and it's still going strong!

Situated 370km from Perth and 225km from Kalgoorlie on the Great Eastern Highway, the locals know all too well that long distance driving needs careful planning and a good night’s sleep beforehand.

The culture of community volunteering is alive and well in the Shire of Yilgarn; over three days of the 2021 Christmas break, 12 volunteers operated the caravan, sometimes doing three, two-hour shifts each.

It is definitely a team effort: the Local Government moves the caravan to the location, power is provided by the caravan park, the local Water Corporation provides bottled water, and the volunteers are all involved in other community groups in the town.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved.

Driver Reviver groups operate at 21 sites across the state, however there are gaps where we would love to welcome new Driver Reviver operators, particularly in the Mid West and Pilbara regions. Three Driver Reviver Activation Packs are available to new Driver Reviver operations. These packs include an urn, gazebo, portable table, esky, extension cord, and signage, and are designed to assist new operators by providing the essential equipment required to set up a new site.

Organisations/groups interested in becoming a Driver Reviver operator are encouraged to download the WA Driver Reviver Program Kit from the WALGA RoadWise website; https://www.roadwise.asn.au/driver-reviver.aspx to learn more about how to establish a Driver Reviver site in Western Australia.
