Recognising the unacceptable scale of road trauma globally, world leaders gathered in New York from 30 June to 1 July 2022 to commit to an increase in investment and action to ensure the Decade of Action for Road Safety goal to halve road deaths and injuries by 2030 is met.
The meeting was attended by Heads of State, Ministers and Member States’ representatives of Permanent Missions to the United Nations, as well as select road safety non-government organisations and stakeholders, granted attendance by application. The meeting resulted in a political declaration, ‘The 2030 horizon for road safety: securing a decade of action and delivery’. Ensuring the Global Plan for the Decade of Action is embraced and implemented at a national level was highlighted by many, including the need to meet Global Road Safety Targets 3 and 4 for safer road infrastructure for all road users. Local Governments can contribute to achieving these targets by conducting an assessment of their road network and putting a program in place to work towards new and existing roads, meeting at least a three star rating or better. Visit the iRap website for more information.
WALGA is currently researching the development of a Road Safety Ratings for Local Government Roads project which aims to develop a new safety ratings tool or adapt an existing tool to evaluate the safety of Local Government roads. Recent workshops provided very useful information to inform the direction of the project and support the adaptation or development of a tool to best suit the needs of Local Governments. With this information as a basis, WALGA will begin the process of developing/adapting a tool. WALGA will pilot the new tool in the first two quarters of 2023 and are currently seeking interested Local Governments to participate.
