In recent months, this has included promotion of the WALGA RoadWise Coffee Stop Program, Blow Zero and Win initiative, safe speeds via the Courtesy Speed Display Signs (CSDS) and promoting the message that drink driving is never okay at local events.
Midway between Kalannie and Dowerin in the Wheatbelt North, Cadoux Traders is the perfect place to stop for a fatigue busting break from driving. As a registered Coffee Stop provider (you can buy all sorts of other unusual stuff there too!), the Cadoux team provides a free coffee for the driver, as well as the opportunity to have a stretch and a chat. The winners of the latest #avonlocalsdrivingchange 'Blow Zero and Win' campaign were recently announced live on Triple M's Terry for Breakfast - Triple M Central Wheatbelt & Avon Valley show. Senior Sergeant David Hornsby and Regional Road Safety Advisor Cliff Simpson drew the three winning entry coupons, with winners Greg Montgomery and Phil Cousins of Northam, and Sadie Murray of Bakers Hill each receiving a $50 Dunnings fuel voucher.
Aiming to recognise drivers who returned a 0.00 blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and tested negative for illicit drugs, the campaign encouraged the community to work together to contribute to road safety.
In safe travel speed news, the Shire of Trayning installed WALGA’s CSDS on the approach into town along the Nungarin-Wyalkatchem Road. The signs show drivers their travel speed, along with a smiley or sad face to encourage drivers to drive at appropriate speeds. In Trayning, these temporary signs are a useful reminder to observe the speed limits, especially near the school and the intersection with Bencubbin-Kellerberrin Road.
The signs were installed just in time for the Tractor Pull, which attracts visitors to the area. These visitors were given a “Drink Driving is Never OK” bumper sticker as they entered the Tractor Pull event, with Regional Road Safety Advisor Cliff Simpson also on hand to discuss the effects of driver impairment and stopping distances.
