Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter Course
Western Australia is leading the way in child car safety, having achieved national accreditation for a course designed to ensure the correct installation of child car restraints (52778WA).
Forming part of the Type 1 Child Car Restraints Fitting Service funded by the Road Safety Council and created by WALGA's RoadWise, the course is expected to increase the number of qualified Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters across Western Australia.
The Road Safety Commision has worked closely with various stakeholders including KidsafeWA, WALGA RoadWise Program and the Red Cross to develop two units of competency covering installation and advice on correct child restraint use to achieve the national accreditation and ensure longevity for the course.
The WALGA's RoadWise is committed to delivering five Type 1 Child Car Restraint courses across Western Australia per year to enable people in different regions to become Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.
The aim of this training program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to competently check and fit child car restraints in vehicles and to be part of a statewide network of qualified and approved Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.
The course covers theory and practical components to enable participants to run their own checking and fitting stations for their clients and community.
This is a nationally accredited course funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and supported by the Road Safety Council.
Why become a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter?
Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter are able to correctly fit child car restraints to an approved standard and give advice and consumer information regarding different types of child car restraints and their suitability for use according to a child’s age and size.
Services can be offered to clients or people in the community who need a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter. Services can be provided voluntarily or clients can be charged a fee for the service.
Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are provided with ongoing advice and support which is available via the Road Safety Project Officer (Child Car Restraints) and other appropriately experienced and skilled practitioners, access to website information, news bulletins and networking opportunities.
The WALGA RoadWise Program delivers the course free of charge, with allocation of places provided with the following preferences:
- Individuals intending to offer a free fitting service to the community,
- Individuals who have a limited number of Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters in their area,
- Limited places per organisation to enable multiple organisations to attend.

The Course in Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting is offered by WALGA RoadWise in the following format:
Unit One: RSCICR301A is delivered as an external unit and can be completed as a stand-alone, single unit. This is a knowledge-based unit which aims to increase an individual's knowledge and ability to provide advice and information to others. This unit takes approximately one day to complete, on successful completion of unit one, participants will be eligible to enrol in unit two.

Unit Two: RSCICR302A is delivered as a face-to-face unit, it extends the knowledge gained through completion of unit one and teaches practical installation and inspection skills. The face-to-face component is one day in length, and a minimum of 60 minutes post course, with assessments.
A unit two, face-to-face course will be scheduled once sufficient numbers of people in a given area have completed unit one.
Participants must be deemed as competent in both units of competency to complete the course.

Unit Two - RSCICR302A Install child car restraints
Enrolments for UNIT TWO are open to participants who have undertaken and completed UNIT ONE. Participants are required to sign and agree to abide by the Business Rules for Fitters and maintain $10 million Public Liability insurance. Participants will be encouraged to consider attending courses in areas other than where they reside to increase their access to a unit two course.
