Western Australia is leading the way in child car safety, having achieved national accreditation for a course designed to ensure the correct installation of child car restraints.
Forming part of the Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting Service funded by the Road Safety Council and created by WALGA's RoadWise, the course is expected to increase the number of qualified Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters across Western Australia.
The Road Safety Commission has worked closely with various stakeholders including Kidsafe WA, WALGA RoadWise and the Red Cross to develop two units of competency covering installation and advice on correct child restraint use to achieve the national accreditation and ensure longevity for the course.
Course Information
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to competently check and fit child car restraints in vehicles and to be part of a statewide network of qualified and approved Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters.
The course covers theory and practical components to enable participants to run their own checking and fitting stations for their clients and community.
This is a nationally accredited course funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and supported by the Road Safety Council.
Why Become a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter?
Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are able to correctly fit child car restraints to an approved standard and give advice and consumer information regarding different types of child car restraints and their suitability for use according to a child’s age and size.
Services can be offered to clients or people in the community who need a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter. Services can be provided voluntarily, or clients can be charged a fee for the service.
Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are provided with ongoing advice and support which is available through the Child Car Restraint Project Coordinator and other appropriately experienced and skilled practitioners, access to website information and updates.
If you wish to be registered as a Type 1 Child Car Restraint (CCR) Fitter, and you have successfully completed 52863WA Course in Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting, individuals are required to:
- hold a Statement of Attainment for 52862WA Course in Type 1 CCR Fitting
- have signed and agreed to abide by the Business Rules for Fitters, and
- provide evidence of $10 million Public Liability insurance.
Course Structure
Through WALGA Training (RTO 51992), WALGA's RoadWise offers the course, with allocation of places provided with the following preferences:
- individuals working in a role for a business or organisation where advice and fitting services are provided
- individuals intending to offer a free fitting service to the community
- individuals who have a limited number of Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters in their area, and
- places are limited.
The course consists of two units of competency; CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints, and CRFPRL302 - Install child car restraints. Participants must be deemed as competent in both units of competency to complete the course.
Course Units
Unit One: CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints
This theory-based unit aims to increase the participants knowledge and the ability to provide advice and information to others. It can be completed as a stand-alone, single unit.
Delivery method: Self-paced/online modules.
Time commitment: Approximately 7.5 hours of training, plus assessments.
- Aimed at individuals who use child car restraints (CCR)s and/or provide advice as part of their role.
- Participants must have a basic level of numeracy, language and computer literacy skills.
- WIFI access to ensure successful participation.
- Participants are required to successfully complete all components of this unit in no more than three months.
- Competency in this pre-requisite unit must be achieved to be eligible for enrolment in Unit Two, CRFPRL302- Install child car restraints.
To enroll in the next intake for Unit One, CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints, email roadwise@walga.asn.au to request an enrolment form. After submission you will receive an invoice with payment details. Your training will be finalised once the payment process has been completed.

Unit Two: CRFPRL302 - Install child car restraints
This unit extends the knowledge gained in Unit One, CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints, and trains practical installation and inspection skills.
Delivery method: Online facilitated sessions.
Time commitment: Eight hours of training, plus 1:1 practical assessment (1.5 hours) and independent assessments.
- Participants will need a level of physical agility, visual acuity, and mechanical aptitude to complete installations and inspections.
- Participants must have access to a vehicle, two different types of CCRs, headphones and a mobile device or computer with WIFI access to complete the assessments.
- Participants are required to complete all components of this unit in no more than three months.
Course Fees
Unit One: CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints, fee is $155.00* per participant.
Unit Two: CRFPRL302 - Install child car restraints, fee is $55.00* per participant. This fee is to cover the costs for the accessories pack required to complete the unit.
After successful completion of the course, participants may be eligible to have the $155.00* for Unit One: CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on child car restraints fee reimbursed. To be eligible for a reimbursement, participants are required:
- Provide a Statement of Attainment for 52862WA Course in Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting.
- Sign the Business Rules for Fitters (including evidence of having $10 million Public Liability insurance).
- Agree to provide a free CCR installation and/or inspection services for the general public, which are advertised on the Child Car Restraint website.
*Nationally Recognised Training is GST free.

Enrolments for CRFPRL302 - Install child car restraints are open to participants who have undertaken and completed CRFPIA301 - Provide information and advice on correct child car restraints.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants registering as a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitter are required to sign and agree to abide by the Business Rules for Fitters and provide evidence of $10 million Public Liability insurance.
*Please note, minimum enrolments numbers are required for CRFPRL302 sessions to proceed as scheduled.
