Local Governments

In addition to their role as road managers, planning authorities and fleet managers, Local Governments also have a role to play in road safety through community development, local partnerships and leadership.

Examples of this local community contribution to road safety may include:

  • Forming a local RoadWise or road safety committee.
  • Managing and supporting Driver Reviver sites.
  • Promoting and participating in road safety campaigns such as Blessing of the Roads and Road Ribbon for Road Safety®, National Road Safety Week and other state road safety campaigns.
  • Erecting courtesy speed display signs and crashed car displays.
  • Implementing local community road safety campaigns targeting local road safety issues (such as the Please Slow Down, Consider Our Kids campaign).
  • Supporting the Child Car Restraint project through promotion of the service in the community or training Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters to provide a service to the community.

Regional Road Safety Advisors provide advice and support to Local Governments. They can assist with road safety actions which are evidence-informed and address local road safety priorities.
