Road safety lights up in Newman

Road safety stakeholders in Newman are making use of the BHP Billiton variable message board to promote road safety in the town.

As part of a range of proposed road safety activities in Newman, the BHP Billiton message board in town will display a series of road safety messages over the coming months.

The message board will target different road safety topics each month, using the Road Safety Commission’s Road Safety Planner and local road safety issues as a guide.

The first topic to be promoted is driver distraction.

From 2003-2012, distraction was a contributing factor in more than 23% of road deaths and serious injuries in the Shire of East Pilbara1

Ways to prevent driver distraction include turning off your mobile phone before driving, adjusting all vehicle controls including GPS before starting your journey, taking a break to eat or drink and ensuring passengers, especially children and pets, are appropriately restrained.
