City of Albany Enhances Road Safety with New 40km/h CBD Speed Zone

The City of Albany has delivered a major road safety improvement with the successful implementation of a 40km/h speed zone across the Central Business District. The project, developed in partnership with Main Roads WA and supported by the State Government, reflects Albany’s ongoing commitment as a RoadWise Council to create safer streets for everyone.

This change aligns strongly with the safe system approach to road safety, which recognises that humans make mistakes, and that the road environment should be forgiving of those mistakes. By reducing the speed limit in the CBD, the City is directly addressing two areas within the safe system: safe speeds and safe road users.

Research shows that even small reductions in speed can have a significant impact on crash outcomes. At 40km/h, drivers have more time to see, react, and stop—greatly reducing the likelihood of serious injury or death, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. The new speed zone makes Albany’s CBD safer and more accessible for all users, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities.

The project also complements the 2024 State Government School Zones and Children’s Crossing Program, which standardised 40km/h limits at school crossings. The decision to expand the reduced speed limit followed a review of crossings on Lockyer Avenue and Middleton Road, highlighting the need for a consistent, area-wide safety solution.

As a RoadWise Council, the City of Albany continues to lead by example, showing how Local Governments can deliver practical, life-saving changes in line with state and national road safety strategies. The implementation of the 40km/h speed zone is not just about slowing down—it’s about designing a system that protects people, regardless of the mistake, because in a safe system, no one should die or be seriously injured just for making a simple error on the road.
