Dowerin Drives Change: New Plan Promotes Best Practice Road Safety to Community

Published on Monday, 12 May 2025 at 11:36:29 AM

The Shire of Dowerin has developed a comprehensive new Road Safety Communications Plan to be delivered to the community throughout the year. This initiative aims to inform and educate the community on best practices in road safety through a variety of targeted campaigns and events.

The Plan includes the promotion of key road safety messaging related to:

  • Road Safety Commission campaigns: Highlighting statewide initiatives to improve road safety.
  • National Road Safety Week: Raising awareness about road safety issues and encouraging safer driving behaviours.
  • Rural Road Safety Month: Focusing on the unique challenges and solutions for road safety in rural areas.
  • Blessing of the Roads: A community event to promote road safety and remember those affected by road trauma.
  • Road Ribbon for Road Safety®: Encouraging the community to wear a road ribbon to show their commitment to road safety.
  • WA Bike Month: Promoting safe cycling practices and encouraging more people to ride bikes.
  • Road Trauma Support: Providing resources and support for those affected by road accidents.

Additionally, the Plan covers a range of topics including:

  • speed management
  • driving to conditions
  • driving under the influence
  • driver distraction
  • fatigue management
  • pedestrian safety
  • run-off-road crashes (as the predominant crash type in the Wheatbelt), and
  • road safety tips for harvest.

To ensure these messages reach the community effectively, the Shire will develop and distribute content through their community newsletter and social media platforms. This approach aims to engage residents and foster a culture of road safety awareness and shared responsibility. It can be adapted to suit any Local Government.

The initiative aligns with the RoadWise Frameworks’ ‘Community Participation’ area, the aim of which is to engage and involve the community in evidence-based road safety actions which support Local Government delivery.
