The City of Amsterdam has taken a positive step towards safer, more liveable streets by reducing the speed limit from 50km/h to 30km/h.
Following the implementation of the lower speed limit, there has been a significant improvement to road safety. Within a year, crashes involving motor vehicles dropped by 11%, incidents with pedestrians and cyclists fell by 15%, and public transport-related crashes decreased by 24%.
In addition to achieving remarkable road safety benefits, the reduced speed limit also saw quality of life improvements:
- reduction in traffic noise
- increase in active travel, particularly walking, and
- increase in socialisation.
These outcomes highlight how lower speed limits can create safer, more predictable streets for all road users, contributing to a calmer and more liveable urban environment.
