Heavy vehicle rest areas are needed for road safety across the country and Local Governments have an opportunity to apply for funding to improve these facilities which are essential to managing fatigue for the heavy vehicle industry.
The Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas initiative provides Local Governments to access funding for a new or upgraded formal and informal rest areas. This includes:
- simple projects like road marker signs for informal rest areas (green reflectors)
- larger projects such as:
- the construction of new rest areas
- the expansion of existing rest areas
- the upgrade of existing rest area amenities e.g. the installation of new toilet blocks, showers or picnic tables.
Under this initiative, the Australian Government will contribute up to $5 million per Local Government project. With up to 80% of the total project cost for projects located in regional and remote areas, and up to 50% of the total project costs for projects located in urban areas.
Funding applications can be submitted at any time, however they will be batched for assessment up to three times per year, with the next batch closing 30 September.
