The Shire of Cranbrook has strengthened its commitment to reducing road trauma, adopting a new Road Safety Policy at its Ordinary Meeting of Council on 18 March 2026.
The Policy provides a strategic framework to guide the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the Shire’s road network in line with safe system principles and Vision Zero. It acknowledges that while human error is inevitable, the transport system must be designed to ensure crashes do not result in death or serious injury.
Through this initiative, the Shire is embedding road safety into all levels of decision-making and operations. The Policy promotes a coordinated, evidence-based approach across infrastructure planning and design, speed management, and asset management, ensuring a holistic response to local road safety risks and supporting safer outcomes for all road users.
Importantly, the Policy supports improved governance and accountability, reinforcing the Shire’s role in delivering safer outcomes for all road users, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. It also strengthens how the Shire is demonstrating their leadership, commitment and integration of road safety into core business activities.
The adoption of this Policy represents a key milestone for the Shire and provides a strong foundation for ongoing road safety improvements, contributing to the long-term goal of eliminating death and serious injury on local roads.
