Child Car Restraint (CCR) Update - After Market Modifications

The Child Car Restraint Information Line receives many calls seeking information about vehicle anchorage points, including queries about how to install after-market anchorage points (those that do not come with the vehicle at the time of manufacture).

The majority of vehicles will come with manufacturer-installed anchorage points, and the location of these can be determined by consulting the vehicle owner manual.

Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitters are able to either assist a client in locating existing anchorage points, fit an anchor bolt kit if required in an existing point or advise people when they need to visit a Type 2 Fitter or Authorised Inspection Station.

However, on occasion, an additional anchorage point needs to be fitted and this is classified as a modification. Any after-market anchorage point needs to be either:

  • fitted by a Type 2 Fitter, who will provide a modification plate, or
  • checked by a Type 2 Fitter or at an Authorised Inspection Station, where a modification certificate will be provided.

The Department of Transport coordinates both Type 2 Child Restraint Fitting Stations and Authorised Inspection Stations.
