Locals Driving Change in Northam

The Shire of Northam RoadWise Committee, with the assistance of the Shire Works Department and the '#Avonlocalsdrivingchange' campaign, has set up road safety reminders around the town with messages such as “Country roads, take me home… safely!”

The variable message boards pop up around town as a reminder to motorists to stay on their toes. One reminder along Minson Place at the Village Green included the messages, "there are no LOLs", "when you text and drive", "#avonlocalsdrivingchange".
At the other end of the Village Green is Northam’s high street (Fitzgerald Street) where shops, cafes and hotels are located. The Shire of Northam’s Northam Town Centre Development and Economic Strategy aims to create links across town between the river and other shopping and business hubs, to improve walkability and make more of the river features. The objective of the project is to create an environment where the interface between pedestrians and vehicles is safer.
The Shire changed the road layout of Fitzgerald Street at the entrance to the Boulevard Shopping Centre to increase the ability of cafes and other businesses to expand their alfresco opportunities. The new treatments have straightened the road, using café style barriers to direct pedestrians towards safe road crossing points.
With this new traffic environment, the intention is to encourage drivers and pedestrians to naturally or instinctively adopt certain behaviour to allow traffic flow but also keep injury severity low in the event of a collision.
